The peripheral nervous system connects the central nervous system (the brain and the spinal cord) to the rest of the body.
The nerves that are part of the peripheral nervous system are responsible for conducting the information to the brain (sensory fibers), controlling voluntary or reflex movement (motor nerve fibers) and coordinating the activity of internal organs and glands (vegetative fibers).
Unlike the central nervous system which is protected by bones and the blood-brain barrier, nerves do not have any protection, being more exposed to aggression exerted by mechanical factors (spinal cord compression), metabolic, toxic, infectious, deficient, which causes unpleasant sensations such as tingling, numbness, burns, pain or reduced muscle strength.
Nerves have the ability to regenerate themselves and regain their functional balance and recent studies have shown that this process can be facilitated by supplementing the diet with substances such as B vitamins, vitamin D, nucleotides (uridine monophosphate and cytidine monophosphate ribonucleotides), antioxidants, amino acids, Omega-3 fatty acids.
The vertebral column is an essential part of the musculoskeletal system that bears the load of the upper body and the head. Also, another role of the spine is to help perform certain moves and to protect the spinal cord, located inside the vertebral canal.
From the spinal cord branch out the spinal nerves that leave the vertebral canal through the conjugation holes, in the vicinity of the intervertebral discs. The spinal nerves together with the cranial nerves and nerve ganglia make up the peripheral nervous system.

Neuropathic pain is caused by an injury or a disease of the peripheral nervous system. Neuropathic pain is associated with neurological and non-neurological disorders, and its incidence increases withmetabolic (diabetes), oncological and lifelong disorders.
Neuropathic pain is a syndrome. Depending on the type of neuropathic pain, the treatment involves multiple solutions from medical, surgical, physical to psychological support.
A complication of diabetes type I and II is diabetic neuropathy. It affects the peripheral nerves and most commonly the nerves in the lower limbs. According to studies, over 30% of the diabetic patients are affected by diabetic neuropathy. The longer a person has diabetes, the greater the risk of developing painful diabetic neuropathy. About 20% of diabetic patients suffer from chronic diabetic neuropathy.
Postherpetic neuralgia is the most common complication of shingles. This condition is caused by the chickenpox (herpes zoster) virus. Pain caused by post-herpetic neuralgia has been described as burning, tingling, stinging and sometimes itching. The pain may be of continuous or fluctuating intensity or may manifest as "seizures."
