Meniscus

The meniscus is a fibrocartilaginous anatomical structure, in the form of a half-moon, that partially divides a joint cavity. The meniscus is also known as the semilunar cartilage. In the human body, the meniscus is found in the knees, wrist, clavicle, and mandible.

Generally, the term “meniscus” is used to refer to the cartilage of the knee, either the lateral or medial meniscus. Both are cartilaginous tissues that provide structural integrity to the knee when undergoing tension and torsion. The meniscus of the knee consists of two plates of fibrocartilaginous tissue that serve to disperse the friction in the knee joint between the lower leg (tibia) and thigh (femur). They are concave in the upper part and flat at the bottom, articulating with the tibia.

A broken meniscus is one of the most common injuries to the knee and causes pain, swelling, and stiffness. Also, there may be a blockage in the movement of the knee and problems in fully stretching the knee.

There are two general types of meniscus injuries, acute injuries, which are often the result of trauma or sports injury and chronic or wear and tear injuries. Conservative treatment - such as rest, ice, and painkillers - is sometimes enough to relieve the pain of a broken meniscus and give healing time to the wound. However, in other cases, a fractured meniscus requires surgery.

Osteoarthritis (also called arthritis) can affect any joint. However, the most commonly affected areas of the body are the joints that support more weight, such as the joints of the knee, hip, and spine, but also the hands (finger joints).
