Bone marrow

The bone marrow is a soft, gelatinous tissue that fills the medullary cavities, the centers of the bones. The two types of bone marrow are red bone marrow, known as myeloid tissue, which helps in the formation of blood cells, and yellow bone marrow or fatty tissue, which supports creating fat deposits. Both types of bone marrow are enriched with blood vessels and capillaries.

The bone marrow contains mesenchymal and hematopoietic stem cells. The red bone marrow consists of a fibrous, delicate, strong vascular tissue that contains hematopoietic stem cells. These are blood-forming stem cells.

Yellow bone marrow contains mesenchymal stem cells, also known as bone marrow stromal cells. They produce fat, cartilage, and bones.

In adults, the bone marrow is located mainly in the ribs, vertebrae, sternum, and pelvic bones. The bone marrow makes up about 5% of the total body mass in adults.

Bone marrow produces 200 billion new red blood cells every day, along with white blood cells and platelets. Most blood cells (hematocytes) in the body grow from bone marrow cells.
